Volunteer Executive | Vice Chairperson

NOLHA is seeking a volunteer to take on the Vice Chairperson role within our organization. This position provides support to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Chair. This person will interact as appropriate with staff, community members, volunteers and donors in a positive and effective manner. This position represents the Chair at all times, both internally and externally, requiring a high degree of professionalism and sound judgement. This includes the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with individuals at all levels, and the ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with great discretion.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Vice chair shall, in the event of the absence or inability of the Chair to exercise his/her office, become Acting Chair of the organization with all the rights, privileges and powers as if he/she
  • Reports to the Board’s Chair.  Support the Chairperson by working closely with him/her and accepting any delegated tasks that are assigned
  • Is a partner with the Chief Executive in achieving the organization’s mission Represent & advocate for NOLHA
  • Chairs meetings of the Board after developing the agenda with the Chief Executive.
  • Appoints the chairpersons of committees, in consultation with other Board members.
  • Serves ex officio as a member of committees and attends their meetings when invited.
  • Helps guide and mediate Board actions with respect to organizational priorities and governance concerns. Discusses issues confronting the organization with the Chief Executive.
  • Reviews with the Chief Executive any issues of concern to the Board.
  • Monitors financial planning and financial reports.
  • Plays a leading role in fundraising activities (nonprofit only)
  • Evaluates annually the performance of the organization in achieving its mission.
  • Works closely with the Chair and other Board of Directors and staff
  • Participates closely with the Chair to develop and implement officer transition plans.
  • Encourages Board’s role in strategic planning

Requirements and Qualities:

  • Must be Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizenship
  • Strong Collaborative Leadership, communication and Accountability skills
  • Must be extremely organized, flexible and possess professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have strong decision-making abilities, attention to detail and a high degree of productivity and accuracy.
  • Must be self-reliant, highly motivated, resourceful, proactive, and efficient while maintaining an approachable and professional presence to both internal and external contacts.
  • Use email, text as a manner of correspondence with other directors
  • Ensure all regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met on time.
  • Establish a high level of credibility and manage strong working relationships with external stakeholders, sponsors and community.
  • Knowledge and experience of fundraising finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organizations will be a distinct advantage but not essential.
  • Proficient writing and speaking skills in English language. Spanish and /or Portuguese skills will be an asset, but not essential

Requirements of Board Members:

  • Board members are the fiduciaries who steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies.
  • Commitment to support in the role and the organization for at least two (2) years.
  • Commitment to support the NOLHA By- Laws and its values; an understanding of mission and goals, and the distinctions between governance and management.
  • Collaboration Partners takes our members’ engagements seriously; those who wish to apply should expect to commit an average should be about 6 hours per month, including board meetings. From five (5) to ten (10) hours a week for special projects work, meetings, and events.
  • Board members must believe in the NOLHA mission and goals of the Mission and respect the confidentiality of information related to the work, donors and community members. These goals and vision are expressed in our mission that all board members are required to read and support.
  • Board Members should have a basic understanding of financial reports such as budgets, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, etc.

  • Serve on 1 or more sub-committees of the Board with an additional time commitment of approximately 10-15 hours per month
  • Establish and maintain positive community partnerships
